Telling the story of Ski Trab means telling a story of men and mountains. The mountains are those of Bormio and men, or better the protagonist, is Giacomo Trabucchi, a professional carpenter. He made kitchens at the beginning of his working carreer, but later kitchens produced by big factories became more competitive.

In 1946 the seventeen year-old Giacomo had already made his first pair of skis for him and his three brothers who were engaged in jumping competitions. Before then they had to share their only pair of skis. The transition from handmade kitchens to skis became almost natural.

His first skis were made of hickory wood and, in the winter of '53 - '54, he stared making downhill skis. Giacomo was a close friend to the founder of the Pirovano Ski School. The two friends took customers to ski and one day “Mr Piro " suggested the young Giacomo to make the first hundred pairs of skis to rent his guests at the hotel he owned at the Stelvio Pass. Giacomo spent the autumn in the basement of his house, the one where he still lives today , to manufacture those skis.

At the beginning his skis were designed for Giacomo’s friends who became his first testers. One of them was Giuseppe Praolini, "Bepino " to his friends, whose best hobby was smuggling. Bepino used Giacomo’s skis especially at night while crossing the Swiss border in the winter season.

The company was gaining importance and Giacomo invented his first logo “three holes” by his nickname. He visited the most important ski-factories at the time and once casually he saw a modern and innovative machine for skis. He watched it for a few minutes and when he came home he built an equal one.

The first mountaineering skis were made in 1961. They were called "Stelvio" and made of duralumin to meet the initial requirements of lightness. Later his sons, Adriano and Daniele, were involved in the family run company. They took over the company in the early 1990s. The best ski mountaineering athletes use Ski Trabs nowadays. Ski Trab is truly a "gem" in Valtellina and Bormio and this company has become famous all over the world.
