The Towers of Fraele are the starting point of this excursion. They date back to medieval times and are located in a strategic position at the top of the so-called "Scale di Fraele" which, in ancient times, was the commercial link between Bormio and Val Monastero: the so called as "Via Imperiale d'Alemagna".
Take the military trail which was built between 1910 and 1913 rising up a slope covered with thick pines.
Beyond the forest you have a wonderful view on Valdidentro and on the steep southern slope of Mount Scale. Pay great care wihile walking because of some landslides.
At the bottom of Mount Scale there are the remains of a small fort whose artillery, during the great war, were in connection with those of the Fort of Oga.
After crossing the long gallery you come out on the northern side of the Mount overlooking the Braulio Valley with the road to the Stelvio Pass and the Forcola Valley with the dams of Cancano and San Giacomo.
Now take the trail coming from the Lake Scale and quickly reach the top where a high Cross was erected.
Thanks to its position, Mount Scale offers a comprehensive view of the wide valley of Bormio and of the surrounding mountains.
Go down along a well marked path through meadows and stones and reach the green meadows on the banks of Lake Scale.
