The dams of Cancano and San Giacomo are in Valdidentro at 1902 meters of altitude, in the Stelvio National Park. They both were built in the 1940s and receive waters from the glaciers of Gavia-Forni-Braulio and of the rivers Adda, Spool, and Viola. They are vast and have a total capacity of 187 million cubic meters of water.
At Cancano you can admire a pristine flora and fauna, which ranges from the most rare and fragrant mountain flowers to the imperial birds and to ibex and chamois. Cancano can be easily reached by car or by bike through a winding road up to the towers Fraele . From here on the road continues unpaved and flat, ideal for relaxing walks and cycling.
At the end of the dam of San Giacomo there is a very large picnic area with barbecues and tables under in the shade of pines and junipers. On the left side of the dam you can reach the summer pasture of Val Trela, while on the right along an easy path you can enter the valley of Livigno. There are countless trails for hiking and mountain biking.
In Cancano many summer sports events, festivals and traditional celebrations are organized. Imagine the excitement and joy to hear the harmonious sound of the mountain choirs accompanied by an accordion ....or the echo of the mountains, as a praise of people and tourists who annually return to this paradise ...
